HSK

HSK or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi is the official language exam for the Chinese language. This exam is used by many institutions and organizations of Chinese education, which is why it’s important to know about it.

One of the known ways to prepare for these exams is to make sure you attend mandarin classes regularly to familiarize yourself with Chinese characters and vocabulary. Linda Mandarin offers HSK training courses as well as practice exams, so you can be confident that you’ll do well on the test. The HSK is offered as written or spoken Chinese courses, depending on your needs and which you prefer.

There are six levels when studying HSK – level one is the easiest, while the final level is the most difficult. There are three sections in each exam – writing, listening and reading comprehension. If you are studying for the final level, it’s important to understand that there are 90 questions, while for levels one and two, there are only 30 questions.

I’m almost at the end of my Beginner 2 Chinese class at Linda Mandarin, and I have to say I absolutely love taking classes here. I’ve personally been in the in-person group class, because I know that’s how I learn the best, but they have online options too which is always handy. I started with Beginner 1 as I knew little to no Chinese, and it was a great, fun class which continued to Beginner 2. The classes I attend are once a week, which works well for me and my schedule (full time work, etc.). I think the weekly classes also lets you have some time to absorb all the new words and knowledge and (ideally – haha) practice them. The administrative staff here are also very good – they’re helpful, fast, and responsive to texts and emails. My teacher for both classes is Zhang YingMing laoshi – and I cannot say enough good things about her. She’s practical in her teaching approach, often gives us tidbits and tips about phrases that native speakers use or don’t use, random trivia, and is just all around fun. She introduces us to songs that help with remembering words, which is always hilarious because they’re designed for kids, but they work! I like that she’s laidback in her approach, but follows the provided curriculum and always completes the classes as planned. I hope to continue taking classes at Linda Mandarin with Zhang laoshi and look forward to speaking and understanding Chinese better with time! --- A short update to my review above. I've continued taking lessons at Linda Mandarin, and am now at the second half of the Lower Intermediate class, which is 20 lessons in total. My teacher for the Lower Intermediate series is Ms. Claire He, and while she does have a different teaching style than my previous teacher, I really do enjoy her approach to teaching. Most days, we start by listening to a video of a sing-song, similar to my previous class. I actually really enjoy these (ha!). The Lower Intermediate series is significantly more complex than the Beginner series, but Claire laoshi makes it fun anyway. She speaks mostly Chinese in class, so it really challenges (and trains) your listening and comprehension skill. It's really a nice surprise (for me) when I find myself understanding whole sentences (I started learning Chinese at zero, and am pretty much tone deaf). Claire laoshi also encourages active participation in class, having us create sentences and translate text, etc., and the important part is when you get it wrong, she guides you to think about how/why the words/structure is incorrect (based on previous lessons, etc.), and doesn't make you feel dumb about your mistake. I'm almost a year into taking classes here, and I look forward to taking more classes in the future!

I was taught by Ms Claire, who really made an effort to get the class engaged & fun despite being an evening weekday class. She uses relatable & real life examples to get us familiar with the syllabus which I appreciate.

I have been learning Chinese with Laoshi Claire for a few months - both in a group and individually and she is just perfect teacher. The lessons contain everything - from new vocabulary and their usage, through grammar to cultural fun facts about Chinese and China. Laoshi Claire puts a lot of emphasis on speaking and listening in Chinese which is great. She is also great fun! Would definitely recommend her classes to everyone!

Really good lessons conducted via zoom. I’ve done the beginners and intermediate courses for the past 4 months. Very convenient and easy to follow with lots of practice and theory work. Learning material are provided beforehand and I am able to listen to the recordings prior to the lesson so i am prepared for the lesson (if that’s your thing). Teaching notes are provided after the lesson. I highly recommend this course!

I have recently completed 40 hours of business mandarin course with April. I really enjoyed the course and what I really like about it is that April will expand her teachings to include common business practices that is linked to a particular lesson. This way I get a broader appreciation and can more easily connect the dot to what is currently relevant. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to brush up their business mandarin and looking for a better understanding.
