These days, there are multiple options if you want to learn Mandarin.

There’s one on one learning where you hire a private tutor to teach you, either in person or online. There’s also the online classroom, where you’re either given a coursework to finish over a certain period of time, or you’re taught by an instructor online along with others.

While both methods have their own merits, the best way to learn mandarin is still to take up Mandarin lessons in Singapore.

Why the classroom setting is better for learning

The biggest reason why you should take your Mandarin lessons in the typical classroom setting is that classrooms are conducive towards learning.

Yes, you’ll be leaving your home or job. Yes, it might be less economical, given that you have to travel.

But, the thing is, language classes are successful because the level of immersion is on a whole different level compared to learning at home on your own.

Because you’re grouped with similar-minded people, you’re more likely to be more eager and interested to learn.

This does indeed come with its own set of problems. For example, you might be tempted to talk in a more comfortable language once you group up with other learners. But, that’s a risk that you’ll have to be willing to take.

Most Mandarin language lessons will implement a strict Chinese-only speaking rule during class hours. Some even go as far as to apply it to include anywhere within the centre’s premises.

Immersion is crucial for learning a new language like Mandarin

In that way alone, a classroom setting is still better for taking Mandarin lessons as opposed to doing it online or via one on one private lessons.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how you’re learning Mandarin if the quality of instructions you’re receiving is substandard.

When choosing language classes, make sure that the instructors they have on staff are certified and recognized. The more feedback a language class or centre has, the better.

Even if not all the feedback is positive, the fact that people keep on coming back to take their classes means something.

Regardless of what method you choose to learn Mandarin, you must choose which one works best for you and your particular learning style.

Some people thrive in a classroom setting, while others are better off learning on their own.

Some learn best in a more immersive environment, such as by actually living in China.

We all have our individual preferences, and if you don’t know what yours is, then now is the best time to find out what kind of learner you are.

Because if you don’t do it now, then when?

Mandarin probably isn’t the only language you’re ever going to learn outside of your Native language, so you might as well try.

Regardless of what kind of learning method you choose, you owe it to yourself to at least try to see if the classroom setting works for you or not.

After you have gained proficiency in the Chinese language, one way to demonstrate it is to take up the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Exam in Singapore. Based in China, the test certificate is recognized internationally for educational institution admissions as well as employment opportunities.
